This simple chicken tinga tostadas recipe can be used for many different dishes. The chicken tinga is simple and comes together with just a few ingredients. Quick enough for a taco night, yet delicious enough to make empanadas with also! This recipe is a favorite of mine because of how versatile it is. You can easily top your chicken tinga tostadas with sweet toppings, savory, refreshing, or even spicy toppings. The world, (and tostadas) are yours!

What is Chicken Tinga?

Chicken tinga is a traditional dish in Mexico, specifically Puebla. The dish is traditionally made from shredded chicken and is cooked in a sauce made from tomatoes, chipotle peppers, onions, and garlic . I love adding cilantro to mine and lime juice. It just gives a bit of extra acidity and freshness. Alternatively, you can use chiles de arbol like I did, if you’re looking for a bit of spice as well.

Chicken Tinga Tostadas

This simple chicken tinga tostada recipe can be used for many different dishes. The chicken tostada is simple and comes together in just a few ingredients.

  • Blender


  • 3 chicken breasts
  • tostada tortillas alternatively, you can fry your own corn tortillas
  • chiles in adobo sauce
  • 2 chiles de arbol
  • 1 large white onion cut into four
  • 1 large tomato scored
  • 5 cloves of garlic
  • 2 tbsp salt
  • 2 tbsp orange pepper
  • 1 tbsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp paprika
  • juice of one lime
  • 1 handful of cilantro chopped
  • 2 tbsp green seasoning recipe in description


  • To a pot of water, add in chicken breasts, tomato, onion, garlic, chiles de arbol, and salt. Allow to boil until chicken is fully cooked through.

  • Add in all ingredients from the pot of boiling water to your blender. Add in ¼ cup of liquid from pot along with 2 tbsp of adobo sauce and 1 chipotle pepper, into the blender. Blend until smooth. Season and blend once more.

  • Shred your chicken breasts and add to a skillet on medium heat. Follow with sauce and allow to cook for 5 minutes. Turn heat off, and add in your cilantro and lime juice. Cover and allow to meld together for another 5 minutes.

  • Assemble your tostadas with your desired toppings, and enjoy.
